West Hollywood has a long and colorful past, but was not incorporated as a city until 1984. The new city adopted a master plan to enhance the quality of life for residents and make the area more attractive to investors. Part of that plan included the beautification of a historic stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard leading from the city's western edge. Jerde was asked to come up with a solution for the blighted eastern edge at the highly visible intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Jerde's answer: West Hollywood Gateway, a vibrant urban center that will serve as a gathering place for residents and a landmark gateway into the city. Inspired by the city's rich diversity, West Hollywood Gateway is an eclectic collection of low-rise buildings that preserves the character of the surrounding streetscapes. But it also creates a more pedestrian-friendly character with wide sidewalks and generously landscaped courtyards intended to inform future developments. To accommodate residents' demands for popular retailers Target and Best Buy, Jerde designed West Hollywood Gateway with an urban fit for the big-box tenants.
