Del Mar is not an ordinary town, and Del Mar Plaza is not an ordinary town center. Jerde designed Del Mar Plaza to celebrate the magical quality of the beach town, carving a the new community center into its sea-cliff site. As a result, Del Mar Plaza creates a natural extension of the village with each of the project's three levels opening to terraces with panoramic ocean views. Trellised pathways lead visitors easily up through the levels past a variety of tenants. One-of-a-kind tenants, including resident owned specialty shops, art galleries featuring local artists and a food market, are intermingled with national retailers, providing a tenant mix that serves residents' needs while reflecting the community's character. When Del Mar Plaza opened in 1990, it was embraced by the residents of Del Mar and the greater San Diego area, achieving the second highest sales per square foot among San Diego shopping plazas.
