Brilliance West Shopping Center

  • Shanghai, China 2004
  • Site Area: 8.4 acres | Total Building Area: 111,483 sq m

Brilliance West is more than a shopping mall, it's a vibrant center for the local community. The project is located in western Shanghai's rapidly growing Changning district. Changning is characterized by restricted-access residential communities and lacks a center where its diverse residents and visitors can gather. The Bailian Group, a collaboration of reputable Chinese retailers Friendship, Lianhua, Homemart and Shanghai No. 1, selected Jerde to design a much-needed commercial center for Changning. The result is a new gathering place for the community. To create a village-like community center, Jerde combined tenants that serve local needs - department stores, specialty shops, cinema, dining and a gym - with generous open spaces. The center of the project is a vibrant, open-air, lushly landscaped town square, where concerts, exhibits and community events take place. Three entry passages welcome visitors from multiple directions into the town square, and pedestrian-scaled streets, alleys and terraces both intersect and overlook activity occurring in the town square. When Brilliance West opened in October 2004, it became the first open-air retail center in Shanghai. Just as importantly, it introduced a community feeling not found in most of the city's commercial complexes.
