Fashion Island

  • Newport Beach, California 1989
  • Site Area: 87 acres | Total Building Area: 125,400 sq m.

When Fashion Island first opened in 1967, it garnered much attention and fanfare. But only 20 years later the crowds had moved to a more upscale center. That's when owner The Irvine Company called on Jerde to bring the people back. Jerde focused on creating a place where people would want to be, not just shop. Fashion Island was transformed into a pedestrian-scaled village that would appeal to both shoppers and residents looking for an enjoyable place to spend time and relax. The renovation included winding cobblestone paths, ivy- covered arbors, sidewalk cafes and courtyards featuring shaded paseos, lush landscaping, fountains, and a koi pond. Since opening in 1989, Fashion Island has annually attracted more than 13 million people who come to attend the Summer Concert Series, view one of the world's largest Christmas trees, let their children ride the Kiddie Choo-Choo train, and shop.
