Hangzhou's West Lake, China's most well known lake, is visited annually by 30 million people of whom only two million are international tourists. In an effort to boost international tourism, The Jerde Partnership collaborated with SWA to redevelop a 21-block district into a world-class destination. The heart of the SWA master plan is Jerde's Hangzhou Lakeshore, a five-block area near the water's edge. To convert the blighted area into a memorable, mixed-use center for the city, Jerde looked to the magic and mystery of West Lake for inspiration. The result is an organic design that integrates Hangzhou's historical and natural layers into an enriched, contemporary urban framework with a variety of distinct places. Extending West Lake into the district, Jerde utilized a canal in one block that carves a dynamic architectural canyon composed with rich landscaping on the lake side, and with glass and manmade materials on the city side. The four remaining blocks form a new 24-hour pedestrian street lined with historic shop houses, modern retailers, restaurants and office space. The street is linked to a lively common space offering a range of daytime activities and a vibrant nighttime entertainment district. The street also features a sleek office tower that will become a distinctive landmark in Hangzhou and offer views of the surrounding natural wonders.
