Xiamen PowerLong One Mall Opens in China

To create truly special, signature public spaces within this project we designed not only a central lagoon but a village rooftop that creates a unique and energizing experience in the sky.

JERDE celebrated the grand opening of Xiamen PowerLong One Mall, a roughly 1.3 million square foot complex designed by JERDE and developed by PowerLong Group. Located in Xiamen, China, the mall is the second phase of the Powerlong Xiamen International Center, a three-phased 4.3 million square foot mixed-use destination masterplanned by JERDE.  The first phase features commercial office buildings surrounded by dining and entertainment, while the third phase, to be completed in the latter half of next year will include a W Hotel and high-rise residential tower.

Xiamen PowerLong One Mall is located directly above a transit station, which JERDE incorporated into the mall's overall plan to enhance foot traffic.  JERDE's unique design includes multiple first floors and a rooftop deck connecting food service, retail, leisure and entertainment to encourage the exploration of the malls' various businesses.

"To create truly special, signature public spaces within this project we designed not only a central lagoon but a village rooftop that creates a unique and energizing experience in the sky," said JERDE Design Principal Tammy McKerrow-Poulos, the lead architect for Powerlong Xiamen International Center.

Situated in the tropical Fujian province, Xiamen was ranked China's second "most suitable city for living" with diverse lifestyle offerings and within a region known for its natural scenery, tree-lined beaches, and relaxed island vibe.

JERDE has designed mixed-use and retail destinations throughout Asia including Langham Place in Hong Kong, Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, and D-Cube City in Seoul.  Domestically, JERDE has designed well known sites such as Bellagio in Las Vegas, Pacific City in Huntington Beach, as well as redesigning the world famous Santa Monica Place and Fashion Island Malls. "When the third phase of this project is completed next year, it will be a true live-work-play destination," said McKerrow-Poulos.  "With the Xiamen PowerLong One Mall as the centerpiece, the entire project will be the new social and economic core of the Xiamen community."
