Fremont Street Experience

  • Las Vegas, Nevada 1995
  • Site Area: 4 city blocks

Collaborating with and inspired by the genius of colorful casino mogul Steve Wynn, JERDE presented a plan for the Fremont Street Experience and was later contracted by the city to formulate an implementation plan. A year later JERDE was hired as the architect by the newly created Fremont Street Experience Company.

In the 1980s, downtown Las Vegas was losing retail and office tenants to the suburbs and gaming revenues to The Strip. The Fremont Street Experience, which not only reversed decline, but outcompeted the $2.3 billion invested in The Strip. The use of lights, which had made the "Glitter Gulch" famous, to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. The idea was immediately successful, motivating almost every casino to invest in improvements or expansions and drawing three bids for the vacant Main Street Casino. Today, Fremont Street Experience comes to life every evening with a show of 2.1 million lights and 540,000 watts of sound. And, seven years after opening, it's still the number one reason to visit downtown, attracting 60 percent of all visitors."
